From CPR to DNR

hospital
|

Not the cheeriest of topics for your summer fun, but important. I installed an AED in my office 3 or 4 years ago after hearing a presentation on how critical each minute is in the event of a cardiac emergency.  And to support having an AED, our entire team undergoes CPR/AED First Aid Certification training every 2 years.  Knowing what to do in an emergency is empowering, even if we are never in a situation where we need to employ the skills we have learned.

Then there is DNR. Not everyone in every situation wishes to be resuscitated.  Under certain horrible no-good end-of-life scenarios, resuscitation is more harmful and goes against the individual’s wishes.  For the Good Samaritan on the street, we would apply first aid because we don’t know and aren’t expected to know what a stranger’s wishes are. But your doctor and your hospital should know your wishes and honor them. That is why having a health care directive and other documents stating your preferences are so important.  We also offer a document for advanced dementia scenarios concerning whether someone wants oral feeding.

All of this reminds me of a book a famous cartoonist wrote about caring for her aging parents and trying to get them to talk about their wishes.  The mother’s response is the title of her book:

Can't We Talk about Something More Pleasant?: A Memoir
